Iyengar yoga is one of the most popular styles of Hatha yoga (the practice of asanas or yoga poses). The title Iyengar yoga was applied by students of the yoga guru B.K.S. Iyengar to differentiate his unique style of asana practice with other forms of hatha yoga. B.K.S. Iyengar (known as guruji by his students) was a dedicated student and teacher of yoga for 80 years. He brought yoga to the world, and in India he is considered a national treasure and was named by Times magazine in the top 100 most influential people worldwide.
The emphasis in Iyengar yoga is on alignment and precision. The use of props such as wooden bricks, belts and bolsters, help the student to practice the poses within the limits of their capabilities. the student gets all the benefits of the pose and avoids the possibility of injury. Because of this, Iyengar yoga can be practised by all age groups and physical abilities, including pregnant women and students with physical injuries.
Iyengar yoga is a holistic approach to health that is beneficial to both mind and body.
Iyengar yoga teachers have a very rigourous and comprehensive ten year training (8 years practice and 2 year teacher training) and are well known for the quality of their teaching.
